EU-OPENSCREEN's European Academic Compound Library receives its first submission from Australia

EU-OPENSCREEN is pleased to integrate a new batch of academic compounds from Australia into its European Academic Compound Library (EACL) – the first batch received from the continent.

Compounds were submitted by Dr Giuseppe Luna, an Organic and Analytical Chemist at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. The compounds he has submitted to our collection were originally synthesized as potential treatments for hyperuricemia, a metabolic disease associated with excess uric acid in the blood. Dr Luna’s compound set targets xanthine oxidase, an enzyme responsible for uric acid production, to reduce the acid’s levels.

As a submitter to the EACL, Dr Luna now has the opportunity to explore new biological contexts where his compounds are relevant. The Central Compound Management Facility at EU-OPENSCREEN ships all EACL compounds to accredited in-network screening sites, where they are characterized and annotated for several physicochemical and biological properties. The compounds will then be incorporated into EU-OPENSCREEN's collaborative screening projects, where they will be screened in assays provided by biologists from around the world. Any hits identified in these screens may spark new, equitably regulated collaborations to investigate them further.

“The value of this initiative is the potential to open my compounds up for the treatment of a wider range of conditions,” Dr Luna shared with us. “By participating in this programme, I hope to have the opportunity to collaborate with other researchers and universities.”

We warmly thank Dr Giuseppe Luna and all past compound submitters for contributing to our Academic Compound Submission Initiative, and we look forward to valuable collaborations going forward!
